Affinity-PrimeMEDIA
 Exklusiver Partner für führende Medien

Today, we face two alarming dilemmas in the media: the information overload and the race for speed.

The plethora of information that reaches us every day, causes a form of disinformation. Since there is too much information, the significant items do not stand out any more.
We are in something called « a buzz ».
The news speed: arriving first is more important than the content. Information has to be verified, reformatted, put into perspective - this takes time and we don’t have it any more. Best saying loses against fast saying.

What can we do to avoid being swallowed by the media machine? Be selective and decide what kind of information we want to consume.

That’s why we are proud to represent high quality media in different countries. Please look at our April newsletter for the latest news.

How is the Chinese magazine market?

The magazine is not a traditional media in China. This family of press was used by the Chinese authorities in a punctual way to inform certain social categories but these publications did not look all like what we call "a magazine".

It still plays a role of niche but nowadays we see a new family of magazines developing and reaching a wider target. Furthermore, with the liberalization of the press accompanying the vast plan of reforms in China, the government has just decided to end the system of "compulsory subscriptions". Which is obviously going to call the market into question.

Up to now international magazines focussed on the sectors of woman magazines and more recently men magazines. Next to this, new strictly Chinese titles but inspired by foreign publications dashed into the lifestyle sectors such as: golf, cars … (very expensive hobbies in China)

1 - Classic magazines are in fact professional publications. Quite like in Western countries, it is here a question of dealing in depth with technical subjects, using a professional jargon. These magazines depend on public bodies.

2 - The new generation of magazines addresses the general public and deals with "lifestyle" and consumption subjects. They are generally under license from a foreign publisher, their circulation figures are rather volatile and their life expectancy is quite unpredictable.

The fact remains that some of these titles are becoming essential. They probably correspond to a new tendency of the young generations.  This reflects the opening of China to the consumer society: a type of press, which is closer to the one we know.

The universe of the female press

The Chinese female press is in full development, but remains however embryonic. The publications very often announce inflated circulation figures, which are definitely lower.

Henceforth more and more in search of foreign partners, the Chinese female press follows too the logical evolution of the vast reform plan launched by the government. This phenomenon entails of course a rapid evolution of the reading habits of the new consumer.

The Chinese female press consists of approximately fifty titles. In spite of the end of compulsory subscriptions a majority of them are still operating on the same old pattern, they are essentially propaganda organs. But a new female press is emerging, inspired by big western magazines or even under license. This family of press started to expand rapidly about fifteen years ago and since then has been surfing on the increasing purchasing power of a certain category of Chinese women.

The female press can be divided into 4 categories: women's fashion press, women's home magazines, lifestyle magazine and youth magazines.
